My name is Nichol Marsch (she/they). My practice is primarily based in large-scale multifaceted installations involving a variety of mediums, photography and craft. My favourite mediums include ceramics, textiles, wood, construction materials, and collected/found objects. In addition to my conceptual visual art I am also an active bead worker and practice a variety of traditional crafts which I often incorporate into my more conceptual work. I enjoy making functional as well as decorative beadwork pieces and finding ways to merge the medium with others. I learned bead working from various teachers including friends, fellow Métis artists, and leaders of Métis beading circles, and independently exploration.
With support from the Canada Council for the Arts, I have produced: Subjects, a large-scale installation, which was featured at Centre[3] for Artistic + Social Practice (2023); Self Portrait…, a multi-component textile installation currently featured in a solo exhibition at the Mary E. Black Gallery (2024); and Barrens, a new collection of ceramics. Currently, I am preparing a new body of work, Moonlight/klayr di leun, which will more intentionally merge my beadwork and related drawings with my more conceptual work. This new series of work/research is where I will draw from for the proposed public artwork.
